Les Voyageurs” Beautifully Imperfect

The picture of the sculpture is so remarkable I think that it cannot be real. It must be a photograph, digitally altered by a master.

The sculptures were put on display in Marseilles to celebrate its position as the 2013 European Capital of Culture. They are skillful works of art even without the omissions, but the missing parts of the sculptures make them truly extraordinary and unique. They leave room for the imagination – are they missing something, or is it something that these “voyagers” have simply left behind? What’s especially impressive is that some of the sculptures seem to stand on very little support, giving them a sort of ethereal and surreal appearance.

Only ten of the life-size sculptures were presented at the port of Marseilles – many more can be seen on his website.

At a deep spiritual level I believe this is what God wants to make of us — He wants to take these human bodies with their missing parts and connect them so that though they have missing pieces, they are still strong, still intact. He wants to take the broken, lost pieces of our soul, and put them together, welded stronger than steel. He wants to make of us not sculptures, but living, breathing beings that are broken but whole.

En 2001, Bruno Catalano received a request to produce a sculpture for Marseille 5th district: a bust of Yves Montand destined to the square dedicated to the comedian singer, place Jean Jaures.

The same year, Bruno Catalano took part in several exhibitions, including SIAC Marseille and Bastille Contemporary art fair. Many local galleries also got interested in his work.
